It was Gm Leo Fong a noted Martial Artist who shared this concept with me. He has used this in boxing, Chi-Fong and Modern Eskrima. This concept in one that sounds so simple of just being relaxed until you just about to hit. This concept sounds funny at first but when you realize that this will allow you to strike harder & faster and last longer when fighting sounds almost too good to be true. GM Leo showed me this using little weights just 3 pounds. This when coupled with Chi-build ing breathing exercise makes for a great workout and training. I have been doing a bit of boxing and everybody I box with says that I hit very hard and throw a lot of power punches. Recently I read an article on FMA Pulse that was about this subject. The author was trying to explain this and gave some examples, it made for good read.

sIr,

I would like to add more, if you don't mind. Best examplle of this concept is jab or jabbing. And add force from hips as you hit your target. As in arnis, the styles  called pilantik or abanico  (snappy attacks) similar to back fist but using the tip of the cane. You can only use this styles  effectively when your arm and body are relaxed. And I also applied the techniques I learn from track and field, That you will move much faster when you hold your breath for a few seconds. But it will  need more practice, easily said than done.   Sony P. Sy   Palis Sagasa

Sony,

You are very correct in your statements and observations. If you add the rotational force coming from the feet couple with the hips and breathing it makes for strong snappy attack with lighting speed. This sounds simple but doe require a lot of practice to perform correctly as you pointed out. thanks for the comments.

Marc, I would also like to add a comment... My former teacher used to say, "swing your stick like you are cracking a whip."  A concept I teach my group but a difficult one to grasp without enough practice.  But don't forget the importance of non-telegraphed blows.  Generate the same relaxed power without telegraphing and your strikes will have devastating effects!

Regards,

Zach
