Get as much training in 2012 as you can afford and put the time in to from a variety of resources. Don't put all of your eggs in one basket so that you develop a well rounded ability to defend yourself. If you are just getting in to martial arts let me make a few suggestions.
There is nothing wrong with taking an aerobics class to get back in to shape but many martial arts classes can give you the aerobics that you get from a non-martial arts class and the benefit of taking a martial arts class is that you learn the art of defense / offense.
Don't be afraid to do a couple hundred push-ups, sit-ups and jump rope to the count of possibly 1000 every day for conditioning. These are often overlooked and are very cost effective measures that can be taken to get yourself in shape every day without leaving your home.
Please consider Stockton as a location that you might go to for FMA even though it involves quite a drive. The groups are huge and are very family oriented. I can highly recommend the following:
