Yesterday, I took three of my students up to Oxnard for some practice with Henry's his students. My students that went with me had been training for only three months and had been in one local tournament. Takalido in Oxnard has some really strong fighters, who have been champions in the WEKAF National and World tournaments. My guys did really well in the sparring. They did a goood job holding their own. The WEKAF method is very much like boxing verses a sword fight. I personnaly do not care for it as it makes people count on thier gear too much and trade blows instead of blocking and countering. I feel that it important not to just trade shots but to be able to block and counter strike.
Master Henry does a good job on conditioning his fighters, they do a lot of conditioning, for at least one hour before sparring. When it came time to spar I dug out my gear and got on the floor and sparred all of his students. It was fun to get out on floor and spar. I surprized some as I only wore light padded gloves and no arm, knee, or thigh protection. As usual it is not the young guys but the older guys that were the crafty fighters. It was good to see old friends and sit and have lunch with some of them afterward. The crew up in Oxnard are good bunch of Eskrimadors.
