We had a great class Saturday and it was topped off by having one of my students pass her #1 test. Now, this isn't an earth shattering event as I have had many students get to this point but in Pat's case, it is really significant. Pat was one of my first students way back in the day when I was teaching cardio boxing at the Oakland Athletic Club. Pat is one of those students who had life insert itself into her training. Before she had the chance to test her #1's in Escrima, she met a man and had two wonderful sons. Needless to say, they took over her life. They are bright, energetic and downright hilarious but they take a lot of attention and Pat had to give up her training to be a mom. Now, most students would just fade away at this point. Instead, Pat and I managed to stay in touch and now that her boys are enroled in Capoera classes, she figured it was time for Mom to get back to training. With the enthusiastic support of the boy's father (who is himself a Tae Kwan Do Black Belt), Pat came back last spring and has stuck with it. I am very proud of her for both passing her first test and also having the strength of character to try to finish what she started a dozen years ago. Sometimes, as a teacher, it is not so much what I teach my students but what they teach me that makes it worth all the while. Congratulations Pat!
