Magtutudlo Ramon Rubia Workshop Explore Classical Eskrima At Defensor Method Central in Chicago on 11/25/09!
Probably the highest ranking Filipino mainland USA Instructor of San Miguel Eskrima, a system he inherited from Grandmaster Felimon "Momoy" Canete, Ramon Rubia is the consumate enthusiast when presenting the material he learned from a Classical Eskrima System from Cebu. He permeates combative enthusiasm forged from years of learning from a true Grandmaster of yore, Momoy Canete. Ramon Rubia presents the multi-level/multi-weapon material with ease and a flair for specific nuances on Momoy Canete's approach to strikes, footwork, intent, organizational logic, and the advantages of training in San Miguel Eskrima. Double stick, single stick, stick and dagger, and empty hands practiced in Momoy's Art was presented well during this night prior to America's biggest night of feasting on a Bird. Mr. Rubia is of the opinion that now is the time to expose the uniqueness of this Classical system of Eskrima. It has been over ten years since the passing of GM Momoy Canete and Ramon feels it is about time to showcase this unique art. Chicago DM members were treated to the effectiveness of Paniil (footwork), saka (upward striking methods), hulog (dropping concepts in strikes), Dos Armas (double weapon drills riped with mathematical logic), and San Miguel (coined after Saint Michael is a set of core movements in Monoy's system), and many more unique concepts Momoy developed. Unique in this style is also the flexibility of adding many patterns to Dos Armas drills, the calculated usage of Espada y Daga footwork for maximum positioning, & the ability to confuse opponents w/ unpredictable striking blitzes. The workshop was held at the Maya Essence, 4357 N. Lincoln Ave., Chicago, IL attended by a very small group of Defensor Method practitioners. The content presented, IMHO was probably one of the most thorough coverage of Momoy Canete's system in the span of a few hours. Mr. Rubia definitely has the knack for demonstrating and explaining the uniqueness and the nuances of this Classical Eskrima System from Cebu. Plans are underway to collaborate with Edie (an Elgin Doce Pares instructor) and neighboring towns and Midwest Locations to bring Mr. Rubia back to Chicago in the near future to explore and hold a bigger seminar/workshop or camp in San Miguel Exkrima.
