Last night we trained at the park like we do every week. This week's topic was how to punch and kick while stick fighting. I took a lesson out of Manong Espi's book he used to say the you distract with stick and change ranges and punch. My students found that basic punches like jabs crosses, bolo and hooks worked the best. The striking area's with punching were limited to the upper and mid zones of the body. From the belt line down kicking and kneeing worked the best simple kick not less. Kicking joints are always most effective. We did slow play to develop skills such as where your focus your eyes when defending, where to punch and kick, why based upon topographical anatomy. Many people are taught to punch but not taught the whys and how to be effective. I find myself fixing other peoples omissions of information on students that have come from other schools. It seems to me that many teacher's have taken a high school anatomy class and explain what you hit and why , I do not know maybe this not common knowledge. I guess after 30 plus years as a firefighter and a Medic to me it is second nature. I strongly believe in maximum damage with minimal effort. Just my thoughts rants and raves!
