Yesterday I took three of my fighters from our club (SBFMA) to the Way of the Stick & the Blade tournament. It was held at LAX Hilton Hotel. Unfortunately there was not kids their age group to fight. They were a bit disappointed about that but were up to do a demonstration match. Two of my fighter- one of my sons and my nephew did a full contact sparring (including punching & kicking) demo using mixed weapons for 1 1/2 minutes. The boys showed the using 36 inch rattan (long sword) and shield (plywood) verses long sword and knife (rattan) AKA Espada Y Daga. The demo was cool you could see two methods sword & shield verses sword & knife. The demo match went very well with boys showing their skills while battling for while. At one point Matthew armed with long sword & shield disarmed Gilbert's long sword leaving Gilbert with just a knife and his live hand skills. Gilbert continued in using his live hand work and knife while Matthew was defending with his shield and long sword. Several of my students came to watch and support folks fighting and they got a chance to see FMA WEKAF style and a point blade matches as well.
Comment by Al S on November 15, 2011 at 10:20am I too went to "Southern California's Largest Filipino Martial Arts Tournament" and saw only 3 rings for competetion with two fights going on and about 100 spectators and participants (11:30 AM). I decided not to attend, saved $10 admission fee and spent only $1.50 for parking for 20 minutes.
Your comments enforce the fact that I made the right decision. What happen to truth in advertising?
