Post From:
Master Joel Juanitas of Bahala Na Martial Arts Association
It is with a heavy heart and great sorrow that I announce the passing of our Great Grand Master Antonio E. Somera at 5:18am on October 28, 2013. Please pray for the Somera and Flores families as they go through this trying time.
Sorry to hear that. My condolences to all who knew him. I only met/trained with him once at a seminar years ago. His death is certainly a major loss to the martial arts community in general.
My heart felt condolences go out to the family, friends and students. So very sorry to hear this sad news...
My condolences to your organization. Although I never met the man I know his memory will never be forgotten because he will always be honored and live forever in Bahala Na.
I first met GM Tony Somera in 1995. He was my teacher under Grand Master Leo Giron and I was fortunate enough to travel the world teaching with him. GM Tony was my best man and a good friend. Circumstances took us in different directions and we fell out of touch in last few years but I will always cherish his memory and the times we spent together. He has been taken from us far too soon and the world is a lesser place for his loss. Thank you GM Tony for all the time we spent together. You will be missed. Myself, my wife Maria and the MFA students offer our prayers for his wife Sally and the BNMA family. GLM
This post is from Master Joel Juanitas of of Bahala Na Martial Arts Association....Although I graduated and received my instructor certificate from GM Tony. I am no longer affiliated with BMAA. But to all that have replied to this blog.. thank you!
GM Somera was an extraordinary martial artist, spending decades of his life devoted to mastering the arts of Goju Royu Karate, Mande Muda Silat, and Bahala Na Arnis. There are not that many people dedicated to martial arts to spend their entire life in it. When I meet people like this, I am always in awe of their personal investment, and I can only count on one hand people who have mastered three arts. Surely he will be missed by his family, friends, and students.
Sincerely,
Thomas
My friendship with GM Tony goes back to our first meeting in 1983. From that point we have always been close... training with (then) Master Leo Giron personally from 1985 through graduation, instructorship and beyond. I was fortunate to spend a day with him at Daguhoy Lodge just two weeks ago and, again, I was with him and Sally just two days ago at the hospital, having our last words. It was a privilege to know GM Tony and our thoughts and prayers go out to his immediate family and his extended family. Bahala Na!!!
My deepest condolences to GM Somera's family and the Bahala Na Martial Arts Association. I was very fortunate to have met GM Somera in 2001 and proudly trained with the Bahala Na group until my graduation in 2006 prior to leaving California. He greatly contributed to my enhancement as an Escrimador and just as importantly, my knowledge and appreciation of Filipino culture and the great instructors (all styles and systems) that carry on the legacy. May he rest in Peace.
