What does it take to defend yourself? Does one has the time to think when confronted with certain physical harm? I have met and appreciated many martial artists. All with different pholosophies in self defence. We do not live in a lawless world, although, at times its seems like we are. There are victims and those who victimize others. We cannot deny that. Some of us live in a cocoon not realizing the dangers out there. I hear of stabbings. rapes and assaults everyday. So, how can we walk this earth with honor, dignity and integrity? Not having to worry about being assaulted physically or emotionally. Survival instincts are inherit in every human being. But the strong always bullies the weak. Intimidation weither it be emotional or physical always sets the tone of any confrontation.

I have practiced martial arts in one form or the other for over 50 years and if there is 1 thing I learned is this, you do not have to be a victim.

If I am personally attacked the attacker puts his life in my hands. I have the choice to maim or kill my attacker. What do I choose? Some say it depends on the situation. One practices his art for over 30 years and never use it but if the need arises he has the skills to defend himself. I would rather not use it at all but is'nt it worth the 30 years of blood, sweat and tears to use it, for say 30 seconds.

The highest skill in martial arts, in my humble opinion, is the ability to not kill. It is easy to kill. Get a gun, a baseball bat , knife and do someone in. You don't really need lesson's for that. It takes great skill to defend with compassion. To allow the attacker to realize one thing that it is futile to keep attacking. Its an art to move with fluidty, timing and rhythm.
In and out of your opponents energy. Give him life that is the gift you offer. Only Kill when you reach the 11th hr. The choice is taken out of your hands and in the hands of God. Then you move with speed, power and intent.

Blessings to All

AN ESCRMADOR MUST HAVE THE WISDOM AND DISCRETION TO KNOW WHEN TO USE HIS ART.

WHEN FORCED TO USE IT HE MUST SHOW HUMANITY AGAINST AGGRESSORS WHO CANNOT DEFEND

AGAINST IT AND THE HUMBLENESS NOT TO BOAST ABOUT THE POWER HE HOLDS.

IN DOING SO HE WILL GAIN HARMONY BOOTH WITH HIS ART AND WITH HIS LIFE.

THE DEROBIO ESCRIMA CREED.

Wisdom: understanding of what is true, right or lasting
Humanity: humane quality, kindness, mercy
Humbleness: deeply respectful
Harmony: a pleasing combination of parts elements

I agree with you sir, I always begin my class with the reading of our creed. I believe it is our responsibility to have compassion when possible and share this message to our students. Our creed ends with the following passages:

I will not be boastful.

I will not instigate.

I will not bully or demean.

I will not fight,

but if you force me to defend myself, or my loved ones,

be prepared,

because I am.

Thanks for your post! Guro Mike
