How Filipino Martial Arts Influenced Albert Einstein*

"In 1905, Albert Einstein published his “Theory of Special Relativity” in which he stated that the laws of physics are the same for all non-accelerating observers and that the speed of light in a vacuum was independent of the motion of all observers. According to Wikipedia, “Special relativity says that every person has their own time. One person’s clock says something different from another person’s clock. The reason…

I don't need to take classes, I'll just buy pepper spray

I don't need to take classes I'll just buy pepper spray

There is evil in this world, and there are those who want to serve that evil to the good people in this world.  Martial Artist are not afraid, for we prepare, we train and we anticipate.  So we walk tall and confident.  We walk into a room knowing that if…

7 Ways I Teach Children Filipino Martial Arts

There are those who believe that children should not be taught a “violent” activity like Filipino Martial Arts. I’ve encountered those who believe FMAs are not appropriate for children because it involves swinging a stick or two. Ahem.

Grandmaster Warlito "Lito" Concepcion

The Filipino martial arts community lost one of its most colorful and beloved leaders last night in the person of Grandmaster Warlito “Lito” Concepcion, affectionately nicknamed “Datu Puti” (because of his gray hair) by many of his friends.

With immediate family by his bedside, he quietly and serenely passed away, having accomplished everything he wanted to do in this life.

A memorial and “celebration” of Kuya Lito’s life will be held in the Greater San…

Big Stick Alert!

TAKKnife.com has recently added 2 new large diameter heavy Synthetic Escrima Sticks to their lineup. The Bodyguard +P and +P+ require quite a bit of strength to handle, however they are great if you want to build power into your strikes.

Philippine Warrior Arts Society 4th Annual Gathering - August 8, 2015

Written by Oliver Salvador

On Saturday, August 8th, 2015, the Philippine Warrior Arts Society held its 4th annual Gathering. But what is the Gathering, one may ask? The answer is simple - The Gathering is when the instructors of the various Filipino martial arts in the region come together to bond as brothers and sisters, as well as present the beauty and uniqueness of their arts to the members of the…

Believe it or not

Believe it or not

For several years now I’ve been blogging and introducing threads on martial art forums for a variety of martial art websites. My purpose for writing in these forums are to share my experiences and start a conversation in regards to Southeast Asian martial arts namely FMA on this site. Often I read comments like, “I’m calling BS on this or that.” But the fact that whether a person believes something or not is based on their exposure or the lack thereof.

When I… Continue

Footwork Friday: Forward Triangle

On my blog, I'm posting a series of articles about Filipino martial arts footwork. Every Friday brings about a new article. I've gotten behind in posting the articles to this forum; so, I'm now playing catch up and posting the articles here.

This was the second in my footwork Friday articles. It discusses the companion to the reverse triangle. The… Continue

The Redonda Drill

I recently wrote up this post on the Redonda Drill, which seems to be practiced less and less by some Modern Arnis groups out there. I have my students practice this often.

It all starts with the feet

I often refer to fencing techniques during instruction.  I spent a good part of my youth in a fencing school, practicing advances, retreats, lunges and other techniques.  My teacher was the father of one of my high school friends.  Maestro Meudt had a small club in Maryland called the Olympic Fencing Club and we would go there and train a lot and go to local competitions.  Later, I signed up for the team in college and I got to compete throughout the mid-Atlantic and once in…

GSBA USA Regional Tournament / ITAK Clothing

ITAK Clothing attended this years GSBA USA Regional Tournament, and helped sponsor this great event. A lot of great aspiring fighters represented their respected schools, to qualify for the Nationals and on to the Championship. ITAK CLOTHING | Drills and Demo

So, I was going over some video files and decided to put something together. Hope you guys like it. It's a mixture of drills, 12 basic strikes, lock and block, and sinawali. Towards the end, I put a clip of a demo we did back in the day for a church group here in our area. I choreographed it mixing in the the lock and block drill, espada y daga style. Then moving on to the sumbrada... (continued…

More than just self-defense

When I decided to pursue training in the martial arts I was a young kid growing up in New York City just trying to find a way to protect myself against the neighborhood bullies. Now I enjoy martial arts training much like others enjoy any other hobby or interest.

In the fall of 1999 I was in Birmingham England for a Filipino Martial Arts workshop. A day prior to the event my teacher sent word for me to meet with him and two other instructors outside of the guest house where we were… Continue
