Recieving this award was like to me, wining the WEKAF World or USFMAF World and at the same time a humbling experience. I am the first to ever recieve this award in the history of the magazine. There are thousands of fighters out there, and hundreds of masters and guros around the world. I asked the Editor Steven Dowd why I was picked and he said it was my attitude to competition, that had earned it. Yes, it was noted that I fought many times, in many places, but it was my possitive attitude…

We had another of our saturday morning workouts. Get people to understand foot work is critical in fighting. If you have good foundation and the transference of energy then with timing can deliver the hits. It sounds simple and broken down it is but to master it is another story. I am amazed at how most people do not know were their feet are in relation to something. I believe if you can dance, you have learn rhythm and timing, then you can learn to move and fight.

We have group that has been meeting for a lunch time workout for three and half years at my work. I just had one of my students reach his 3 year anniversary. It was great workout with a combat flow utilizing all three ranges for stick fighting, them dissarming each other and working with knives, then going to empty hands with a takedown and choke. We then practiced empty hands, utilizing limb desruction methods, elbows or knee strikes and hooking/sweeping. We finished with some knife sparring…

This was an amazing weekend for FMA here in South California. The USFMAF in Brotherhood with Eskrimadors Accademy had two tournaments togather side by side. There everybody was at the Long Beach International with two FMA tournaments being held as part of giant martial arts event in world class facility-the Long Beach Convention Center. With Masters doing seminar upstairs on Saturday and Sunday while tournaments were happening downstairs. In one ring was the USFMAF with all seven of its…

Well last night was impromptu sparring session bewteen three different local FMA fight crews. We had blast doing point and continous sparring, out in the garage. padded stick, live stick, padded knife with kick and punch, and mixed weapon sparring!! Not for faint at heart folks, sweat flying with some really great training happening!! This what happens when you get four teachers togather, check the egos at the door and just play with garage door closed. The folk who will fight us at Open World…

Martial arts teachers are a fickle bunch to be sure, most believe that a slow steady progression from a dogmatic position is the only way for an adult beginner to understand the nuances of an art. They take their raw recruits and place them at such a low level on the learning curve that it truly hinders growth and confidence. I have found it detrimental to adult students to place them on the same ladder as a child student. Adults and children are different in their mannerisms, experience’s and…
