SIBAT and STAFF work

Seems like there is a number of stick work videos out there showing everything from disarms to fighting but there is not much available on Staff and Sibat. I have posted several sibat videos on youtube and have searched for others and cannot find any. What I have found has been Japanese oriented and has very little to do with Filipino arts. If anybody has any leads on Filipino staff work- speak up!

FREE SEMINAR IN MIAMI (FMA Gathering hosted by Chad Bailey) Free for all

Hey Abundio,

Hope your seminar went well this weekend.

Looking forward to us all getting together at the Gathering.

Changed the start time to 9am and I am running a basics class for first timers to start things off. Just footwork and counters off Cinco teres.

I wanted to give to the teaching slot right after lunch! Lunch is 1-2 so 2pm would be your start time. Is that OK?

I told everyone else to prepare about an hour class but you can go longer if needed. just let me… Continue

Collapsing the triangles on the human body as applied in Maharlika Kuntao

When an attacker is facing you and launching an attack, the knowledge of how to collapse the major triangles of the body becomes a determining factor on how to provide a quick and destructive way to protect yourself with minimal effort, but with extensive damage.

As we know the Filipino martial arts are based on angles of attacks and the ability of how to use the energy of the strike determines how much of the triangle can be used as a defensive way to put the attacker at a distinct… Continue

2009 Spring Gathering of the tribes

Well, today is the first day of the gathering. I am loading up the van with my toys and getting ready to join this rag tag group of IMA and FMA misfits for another round of crossing hands, sticks, and personalities. To date this has been the premier event for me. I have been to many seminars and walked away with only basic skills and techniques. This seminar is way different than that. I walk away each time with a deeper understanding of many things. Well worth the time and effort.

If there is any redeeming value to the death matches of early Eskrimadors, it is the fact that it produced one of the deadliest fighting methods of the planet. Centuries or intermittent skirmishes against Moro pirates and colonial rule brought forth a martial art that was developed to defeat superior weaponry and strategy. The techniques of the earliest forms of archaic Eskrima practiced by the Mactan Chieftain Lapu-lapu had only 5 striking angles and one thrust.… Continue

What does your training tell of you?

It is an article that I wrote for a defensive tactics association and was printed in their e-zine and in a forum in Australia.. It was written in 2007 when I first came back to work in the law enforcement field after a 2 yr sabbatical working stateside..

. Hope to hear constructive and maybe a few destructive comments as a follow up article is planned..

A very interesting fighting method from the Philippines...

In the Philippines, when speaking of what is referred to as the grappling aspects, you will hear words like Buno and Dumog. They mean the same but are in different dialects spoken in the Philippines. Grand Tuhon Leo Gaje refers to Buno having more to do with striking with the hands. There is also Layug from another dialect which means about the same thing. Guro Dan Inosanto uses those words often...so did the late Larry hartsell. Layug is more with the take downs from standing and Kuntzi, the… Continue
