Review: Nap. David Guillory's Custom Sticks

Everyone knows Rattan sticks have a tendency to eventually blow out. The question is: how long will your set last you? Do you find yourself buying sticks once every month or two? If so, how about changing that to once every six months to a year or even longer! This is an independent review. I have not been paid to write this review, nor has it been requested.

When I first received my sticks from Maestro Nap. David Guillory, I'll never forget the moment. As soon as I held them in my… Continue

The Illusion of Knife "Fights": Does FMA Really Work?

Ok all, now that I've introduced myself as a newcomer to FMA, and mentioned what I would "like" to learn, and that I have mentioned I've been involved in the military in my lifetime, some real "beginner's questions" are now finally coming to mind in which I would like to ask the FMA community.

I was involved in "drug interdiction" when I was stationed in Honduras back in the 1990's, at a support air base about 30 minutes away from Comayagua, Honduras. If you type "Soto Cano Air Base"… Continue

My Journey: From Kombatan Neophyte to GM - Post 003

Now I Should Be Able to "Stick" With It!

Wow, equipment is all acquired, now if the student can just get the transportation thing ironed out - my little 1987 Mazda B2000 has been involved in a collision and it is a real mess. I've got a motorcycle currently being paid for to do the 5-hour round trip to Ft. Collins each Saturday through the Summer months, but can't have the joy of the new toy until all payments have been made. It's a… Continue

Weapons Training

Why Train With Weapons?

A common statement by individuals who lack the knowledge and understanding of weapons training is that "you do not always have a weapon."

First, it is true that many people will find themselves unarmed when faced with a situation that involves the real or perceived possibility of bodily harm. However, someone who is properly trained with a weapon ALWAYS has a weapon; whether physically or mentally.

Second,… Continue

Combat Grappling!

Quote paraphrased from the late great Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner and trainer, Carlson Gracie. He said,"Punch a jiu-jitsu black belt in the face once and he becomes a brown belt, punch him in the face twice and he becomes a purple belt." In my opinion what Carlson was trying to say is jiu-jitsu practitioners and grapplers of others diciplines in grappling need to be more rounded in other combat disciplines such as boxing, muay thai kick boxing and other striking disciplines. So after your… Continue

Delays Getting Started!

I was looking forward to my first class with GM Shelly on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010 It's obvious that getting things going will be a little tougher than I had planned. I was instructed to find a training partner whom I can spar with throughout the week back in my hometown, as I must travel a 5-hour round trip every Saturday for the training I desire and need a sparring partner here to… Continue

My Journey: From Kombatan Neophyte to GM - Post 001

In The Beginning

Well, here I am contemplating the idea of learning the Kombatan system of Arnis/Eskrima. Already I've been told by family members: "You aren't a Spring chicken anymore, you're 41. You've gotta be outta your mind. There isn't enough time left in your life to get anywhere near good at it. Grow up!" Well, in one breath they say I'm "too old" but then they sit there and tell me to… Continue
