One stop shopping martial arts - Good for business but is it bad for the martial arts?

Posted on July 6, 2017 at 9:33am 0 Comments

There was a time that I recall where martial art schools specialized in one area of martial arts such as karate, Kung Fu, Jujitsu, FMA, Pencak Silat, Muay Tai, etc.

Over the years schools have restructured their curriculum to encompass all of the above and then some. Many martial artists have come to realize the value in exploring other arts but does the business of establishing a sort of Walmart type martial arts school have a negative affect on martial art systems in general?

The question no practitioner of FMA wants to hear

Posted on June 28, 2017 at 10:41am 7 Comments

The question: How practical in today's world is the use of the stick or sword as a necessary means of self-defense?

A question like the aforementioned one is enough to get many practitioners of FMA triggered.  The common rebuttal is often the fact that any object can take the place of the stick or sword.  Really? Believe it or not

Believe it or not

For several years now I’ve been blogging and introducing threads on martial art forums for a variety of martial art websites. My purpose for writing in these forums are to share my experiences and start a conversation in regards to Southeast Asian martial arts namely FMA on this site. Often I read comments like, “I’m calling BS on this or that.” But the fact that whether a person believes something or not is based on their exposure or the lack thereof.

When I… Continue

More than just self-defense

Posted on July 17, 2015 at 10:41am 8 Comments

When I decided to pursue training in the martial arts I was a young kid growing up in New York City just trying to find a way to protect myself against the neighborhood bullies. Now I enjoy martial arts training much like others enjoy any other hobby or interest.

In the fall of 1999 I was in Birmingham England for a Filipino Martial Arts workshop. A day prior to the event my teacher sent word for me to meet with him and two other instructors outside of the guest house where we were… Continue

Greetings Guro Zach Jenkins,

it was really a blast communicating with you recently. I truly do enjoy reading your various forums. Your journalistic skills & abilities are well implimentated within the field of martial arts. Continue to write & to inspire others; and also continue to be a strong force within the arena of FMA...Thanx for connecting with me & reaching out. If in any way I can be of service to you, please do not hesitate to call upon me. Lastly! I'm sure that our paths will meet at the crossroads of FMA... "Maybe sooner than we think".

P.S. Please let me know how I am to properly address you 'title' wise.

Until that glorious day comes!

Hi Zach,
Not that much, I only get to play at Central Park when my friends from Manhattan are available and they're always traveling around. I usually train at the parks in Jamaica Queens. Its nearer where I stay at present. Looking forward to meet you, let me know when you're in the city.
