Larry Hartsell is a martial art legend in JKD, Kali and grappling. He died in 06. I still miss him. The one thing that sucks about getting older is watching people you love die as time goes on. I was with Larry for 25 years.

I have a very brief explanation of it here - http://www.traditionalfilipinoweapons.com/Kampilan.html I can tell you that the handle is an old design. This particular blade design is newer than the handle design...maybe being 400 years old give or…

Kuntao Dumpag for women was on a TV show called Connecticut Lifestyles, WTNH channel 8

Posted on March 30, 2010 at 2:00pm 2 Comments

For many years I have been doing Rape and Mugging prevention seminars all over the place. I do them in High Schools, Colleges, womens organizations, corporations, etc. What I show them is an abridged version of Kuntao Dumpag. Due to the vicious content of such a style they seem to like what I show them. Its the way an animal in the wild would actually fight off a predator so it makes sense to the woemn, and the men who do my seminars or my classes. Its quite an unusual fighting…

My Fighting Style is the Best. No Need to Train Other Styles...

Posted on March 19, 2010 at 10:23am 7 Comments

Is there anything wrong with knowing one style? After all, everyone is involved in martial arts for various reasons, and not everyone's reason is to defeat the other guys style. Martial arts were really created to give the "weaker person" an edge for self defense purposes for the most part. Then again, pride in one style being the best is a very common belief, especially for many martial art old timers. They say you should be able to do one…

The History and Culture Behind Filipino Weapons to Present Time...

Posted on January 22, 2010 at 2:43pm 4 Comments

Now this is based on knowledge i have acquired during my various Philippine trips over the years.

It is also based on my observations. At this point in my life, I have been there enough times to come to these conclusions.

A lot of the blades that I have on the TFW web site are very rare. We found some of them from some old men on whatever island in the Philippines, others were in my friends family tribe handed down through generations. Others were located in museums in the… Continue

A very interesting fighting method from the Philippines...

Posted on May 1, 2009 at 7:09pm 2 Comments

In the Philippines, when speaking of what is referred to as the grappling aspects, you will hear words like Buno and Dumog. They mean the same but are in different dialects spoken in the Philippines. Grand Tuhon Leo Gaje refers to Buno having more to do with striking with the hands. There is also Layug from another dialect which means about the same thing. Guro Dan Inosanto uses those words often...so did the late Larry hartsell. Layug is more with the take downs from standing and Kuntzi, the… Continue

Hi Guro Ron,

I'm glad to find you here as well.  I'm sorry I wasn't able to make the latest Wing Chun/JKD seminar.  But I'm really interested to see what's happening at this Kuntao Camping Trip coming up.

I'm only at the beginning stages with eskrima, but already I've been given some great espada y daga techniques (serrada-abierta).  Can't wait for more!  I love the espada y daga too, because it's the battle phase of eskrima!
