Philippine Warrior Arts Society 4th Annual Gathering - August 8, 2015

Written by Oliver Salvador

On Saturday, August 8th, 2015, the Philippine Warrior Arts Society held its 4th annual Gathering. But what is the Gathering, one may ask? The answer is simple - The Gathering is when the instructors of the various Filipino martial arts in the region come together to bond as brothers and sisters, as well as present the beauty and uniqueness of their arts to the members of the…

2nd Gathering of the Philippine Warrior Arts Society

Posted on August 19, 2013 at 2:16pm 0 Comments

Wow, another Gathering has come and gone, and what an awesome Gathering it was!  Guro Phil started the day off with an awesome session of Arnis De Mano.  He is a great instructor and his session included some well-appreciated points on body positioning and disarms.

Kapatid Herald Casana did a great presentation of Pekiti Tirsia perspectives on bladed combat.  He was high-energy and very well received.

Guro Randy King gave a way awesome presentation with an…

Guro Carson McDonald's Opening of St. Albert Kali

Posted on October 7, 2012 at 8:42pm 0 Comments

Guro Carson McDonald opened his school, St. Albert Kali, with an inaugural class this afternoon. I had the pleasure of attending to watch him teach (I could not participate as my neck was still sore from Guro Noah Walt stepping on my head and neck at GM Dan Rutano's seminar in Red Deer yesterday), and I must say that Guro Carson is a great instructor. I especially noted the way he handled the opponent modelling drills where one person would role play as a "bad guy" and feed his partner…

GM Dan Rutano's Seminar

Posted on October 6, 2012 at 11:38pm 0 Comments

GM Dan Rutano's seminar in Red Deer this afternoon was awesome! Tito (Uncle) Dan was awesome as usual, as was GM Gil Lafantaisie. Kuya (Big Brother) Gil and Tito Dan ran us through so many different techniques and concept applications that people's heads were spinning. I was especially pleased to have had the opportunity to present Tito Dan with a certificate from the Philippine Warrior Arts Society recognizing him as a pioneer of Filipino Martial Arts in Canada...he really deserves…

Listen, old friend, the life of a warrior is never the easiest choice, we have separate cultures depending upon our backgrounds, but there is one thing all warrior cultures hold in common, that a warrior is more than just a fighter. The best warriors were poets, and teachers, and story tellers, amongst other things, I do not consider myself one of the best, but I practice other things than the way of war, it is a legacy I leave to my descendants, and my friends. So here is an offering for you my friend, and one of the reasons I got out!

Yes sir I actually was researching the art of kali/eskrima/arnis and upon repeated search your name is prominent I read your comments on this website wich are very knowledgable and aware in this subject , I also noticed you train the police. All of this brings me to seek instruction from you because as far as I can tell you are the best in our area.

Hi sir I am from Calgary and am very interested in seeking instruction from you. Is this possible?

Yes I got married here, and until Canada changes its policy towards allowing Mexican nationals to visit as tourists, I can not see my self returning for very long. The region is more stable than most Canadian cities, for all of it's being along the trade routes of the narcos. It is calm here and I have found happiness, and even some peace, (strangely enough), I had a wedding invite for you, but i couldna get ahold of you to give it to you. We are expecting our first born in a couple of weeks, Tio Ollie should come and visit the baby... I am guiding tours into the Sierras, to Caves, and for hikes, but business is slow, I also scout new trails for other guides, that's me, out on point again... how is life with you, I suppose your boy is old enough for you to start training him? i hope all is also well contigo!!

Greetings from deep in Guerrero,Mexico.

Now when I have the time and energy to train, I have no one to train with, a sad state of affairs, so I review stances, and motions solo. This is good for maintaining reflexive conditioning, but I can learn nothing new, nor improve upon the techniques you have already taught me... Perhaps one day you will come out this way - for vacation - and we could have some fun. I can find no Goru in my region Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, perhaps you could send someone down?

Hi Everyone:

The 2012 Alberta Bushido Open Tournament has come and gone.  The tournament overall had decent attendance, but the FMA weapons sparring was poorly attended.  There were only about 10 competitors so it was kind of disappointing to see a lack of support for Guro Sonny Padilla's and Maestro Norman Suanico's event.

Hopefully we will see more support and unity in Western Canada FMA community in the future.

With respect to all always,

Ollie

Dear Guro Ollie,

No way. No offense taken here. Thank you for your courtesy and respect. These are things that we should promote always. Thanks for all the great pics and input to the site. It is appreciated.

Much Respect,

Henry Paz

Guro Ollie,

Thank you for the add, the response about your picture and the great compliment. But I am not an owner of the title Guro. I never graduated from MSB Academy in Serrada Concepts or anything else. Just wanted to correct that on record. I love FMA like no other though and I am an Eskrimador for life. I beleive that even when I do get my Guro title I will think of myself always as a student. Thanks again.

Respectfully,

Henry Paz
