Hammer time

Okay, so now I have freekin' seen it all! I just came across a video of a FMA school promoting it's "hammer system" complete with Delrin practice hammers tucked in their waist bands. This instructor and his Uki were demonstrating basic "Hammer" defenses against a #2 delivery; a sweep block and a jamb. Are you serious? Do we really need to develop an entire system around an improvised weapon? Come on! Let's get serious. People are going to pay good money for your "Hammer System" and buy your…See More

Loyalty or obedience?

Remember that history is written by the conqueror and that obedience is often mistaken for loyalty.Questioning authority is not disloyalty if that authority is both capable and truthful. Being in a leadership position such as a Guro means you have to lift to a higher standard. Students will question your intentions, your validity, your Bona Fides, as it were. This is not heresy. This is a student, who is unsure of themselves and the art they are learning, seeking solidity and certainty. Most…See More

Block hard

We recently worked on some consecutive, simple blocks. They were Roof on #1, Sweep on #2, Inside on #3 and X Block on #4. Once we worked on stepping to 12:00 and cutting off the strike, I had the students run the blocks in sequence. My emphasis was on establishing and pressing dominance while blocking. This means you have to rob your opponent of the attack. I told them my favorite phrase "Be the rock upon which your opponent's attack breaks". This is a tough concept for a lot of people to…See More

It all starts with the feet

I often refer to fencing techniques during instruction.  I spent a good part of my youth in a fencing school, practicing advances, retreats, lunges and other techniques.  My teacher was the father of one of my high school friends.  Maestro Meudt had a small club in Maryland called the Olympic Fencing Club and we would go there and train a lot and go to local competitions.  Later, I signed up for the team in college and I got to compete throughout the mid-Atlantic and once in…

Taming the savage within

Posted on March 16, 2015 at 2:38pm 2 Comments

I watch a few videos from time to time on techniques and real life situations.  I am often surprised by how barbaric and savage we have become as humans.  Maybe it was always this way and we are only seeing more of it since the birth of the information age.  But, I don't remember things being this savage; almost bestial.  Have we not evolved at all?  Are we devolving back into unrestrained, banal, barbarism?  It seems like we are.  So, train.  Train so you have some skills to fall back on…
