I am working on getting the University of Arkansas to allow me to teach the Filipino Martial Arts on campus. Any personal recommendations for myself and the FMA are greatly appreciated.
As usual, the individuals in charge have absolutely no understanding of the FMA or martial arts in general so I am having to sell all of the positives that can be gained through training. I also have to market myself in a manner of speaking so that I can get my foot in the door. Thankfully, my Graduate work is in Sport and Recreation Management so I am coming into contact with all of the right people.
Also, I know several people (like Buzz) have been teaching FMA at local colleges for years. Any feedback for me or helpful information that I can pass along to the University is welcome. And last but not least, any officials (Senators, etc.) from the Filipino government that would like to push this effort to spread the FMA please contact me directly.
Salamat!

You may want to contact Jerome Barber of Modern Arnis..he has been teaching an Eskrima class at this community college in upstate NY for some years now. He may be on the FMA network, but he just published
an article in Filipino Martial Arts news webpage just recently. Just Google Dr. Jerome Barber and you should find him.
By the way, I met Eskabo Daan Robert Castro at the Mataw Guro Association meeting here in the DC area last week.I know you have demo'ed at his school...great style and an good guy too...Best to you..

I would suggest contacting Dr. Jerome Barber. According to him he is the only instructor teaching Kenpo and FMA for college credit, at Erie Community College South. He's been doing so since 1987.
I've been an adjunct professor for his program, on another campus, in the past.
Email me for his contact info. at amerasian@verizon.net

Permalink Reply by Lew Cottell on September 28, 2011 at 10:49am Thanks for the info so far. It is helpful to know the colleges that currently have FMA classes being offered.
Lew, the classes will be part of the Instructional programs offered by the Recreation department. The U of A had a martial arts instructor in the past (do not know the system/style) that insisted on using lethal terminology and techniques. The classes were ended immediately and all of the participants received a refund. I have taught at other schools for a variety of ages so I understand the game. :)
Hello Guro John,
I would be very happy to help you formulate a FMA Curriculaum for the university program.
Having written just such a curriculum I have an idea of what a university program would need
to include in a curriculum document. In addition I have been teaching my curriculum for the past
26 years at Erie Community College in Orchard Park/Buffalo, NY. My curriculum also has the
express written approval of the late GM Remy Presas, Modern Arnis (1989) plus GM Tom Bolden,
American Modern Arnis (1992) and GM Al Tracy, Tracy System of Kenpo (1992).
It is essential that you approch your curriculum presentation from an academic perspective and
present that curriculum with a semester (12 to 15 week) time frame approach. You will also have
to establish a workable and testable set of objectives and outcomes. You will also need to establish
how many semesters you will need to complete a cycle of instruction for the completion of program.
My curriculum plan covers four (4) semesters. Write me at escrima_kenpo@hotmail.com
so that we can discuss this in some detail. I can help you develop your own curriculum based on
whatever FMA system(s) that you want to use as the core of your instructional program.
I'm genuinely looking forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Jerome Barber, Ed. D.

I am not sure, but it is possible that Terry Joven of the Bahala Na was teaching Escrima for credit at a junior college. MIght ask him what arrangements they had with the college / university. And, again, I am not sure that it was for credit but any input in to the arrangments that they had that he could give you might help.
Sincerely,
Thomas Ivers

I was thinking FMA, but of course ANY help from any well established martial arts program might be great to get. My Hap Ki Do instructor (for 1 semester only) GM Pak may be available for consultation and he managed one of the oldest and largest martial arts programs in the USA at Iowa State University. They teach Hap Ki Do, Judo and Tae Kwon Do. I beleive that he is now retired. He managed a single course per activity and an after school club for each.
