Bacalao [bah-cah-lah'-o] -- In Basque (French/Spanish) it simply is a name for a "cod-like" fish or a real cod fish. It also means "miser." In Ilongo it means queer. It also is a word to describe a women's lower female anatomy. To best describe the movement it is like a reverse-one in the Pekiti-Tirsia system or a reverse umbrella movement. I'm not sure which system uses this term.

I learned this word training with Gary Herman at the Martial Arts Training Centre in BC, Canada. Gary is under Mark Mikita and Paul Vunak. He didn't explain any details on the word only how to demonstrate the technique.

Never heard this term in relation to FMA. Give Paul a call maybe he can shed some light...
Never heared any methods with that word we do enjoy eating the fish during the lent season
I have heard Guro Dan talkin about this in ref to GM Lacoste-- and said it refers to the fish that swims in circles. (like an infinity symbol) in the PI... might look in that direction.
The spelling of the word is Bakalaw [bah-cah-lah'-o]. I found it by accident. If you google codfish in the the Philippines it comes up as Bakalaw.

It turns out many North American's do not know how to spell it. They don't know the languages so they put it on paper as they hear it in class.

The root word in Europeon so it brings up a lot of questions.
I heard reference that bakalaw is also redonda but I recently saw someone use bakalaw differently than redonda.

Bakalaw was done tip up with the stick doing a small circle. It started with an inward #1 bakalaw with a retracting witik that brought the stick back to the beginning of the #1 strike.
