Arnis bill now a law
THE GAME OF MY LIFE By Bill Velasco (The Philippine Star) Updated December 14, 2009 12:00 AM

Arnis is now the official sport of the Philippines.

Before the weekend, President Gloria Arroyo signed into law Senate Bill 1424, authored by Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri. Zubiri announced this at the National Arnis Congress held at Rizal Technological University from Thursday to Saturday. The lawmaker was teary-eyed when he recounted how the late grandmaster, Roland Dantes, constantly pushed for the sport to become a symbol of this country.

“My uncle fought so long for that bill, we are so happy that it is finally a reality,” said a nephew of Dantes, Chris, who received an award on behalf of his departed uncle. “This is great.”

When the law takes effect, its impact will include the propagation of the sport in all schools, which will also be mandated by law. As of now, many other sports are already required in many schools as part of physical education, way ahead of even our national indigenous sport.

“This is what we’ve been waiting for,” said Rey Dominguez of the Philippine Council of Kali Escrima Arnis Masters (PCKEAM) at their national kali sports championship opening at Ynares Plaza in Binangonan, Rizal yesterday, “Grandmaster Roland’s long-time dream is now a reality. We can take it from here and reunite the sport.”

Zubiri is also pushing for the establishment of a genuine Filipino martial arts sports association, like world governing bodies of other sports. The loophole is that there are none, because the sport emanates from here.

“I’ve been saying for so long that everyone is fed up with the current leadership in arnis,” Zubiri told this writer. “What we need is change that people will feel. After all this time, we’re not even in the SEA Games yet.”

Over the weekend, Sen. Alan Cayetano and Rep. Lani Cayetano sponsored arnis training for hundreds of barangay tanods in Pateros and Taguig, under the supervision of PCKEAM. The training including basics of single-stick self-defense, and unarmed combat. The barangay officials learned how to subdue their more unruly constituents and protect themselves with the only they are issued: a baton.

In February, the PCKEAM is planning an international tournament to bring together the masters from all over the world and finally arrive at a consensus on how to move the sport forward. Since there has been no election in Arnis Philippines since 1986, many of them have gone their own way to propagate the sport, resulting in a multiplicity of styles.

“There are many common grounds in the sport,” Dominguez continued. “We can work from there. What is important is that we are accepting everyone.”

As an aside, The STAR has heard from different sources that officials of Arnis Philippines are spreading the rumor that this writer has issued an apology to the leadership of the association regarding past columns critical of their management of the sport, or lack thereof.

Truth be told, this writer stands by everything written about arnis here, and the facts presented. If I were ever to apologize to anyone in any sport, I would do it here. Also, an official of Arnis Philippines even writes against this columnist along with our bloggers on Philippine News for the Filipino Global Community under an alias. If they need an assumed name to be able to speak out, then they aren’t worth my time, or yours.

The only thing i long for before i pass on ( hope that's along way from now ) is that Stickfighting can make its way into the OLYMPICS, but knowing those guys THE OLYMPIC COMMITEE that is .... is that they will find it too BRUTAL but hey can they let Taekwondo in there............ yet we wear more protective gear than they do..........unless we go KULATA style
I think the reality between the judgement of the Olympic Committee was very lame and judge-mental. I don't think they are taking the whole Kali Arnis community seriously in spite of the fact that it is almost represented in all corners of the world. They don't give specific and enough basis of their decision. I think the only way to persuade the Olympic Committee is to invite them to a very big gathering and let them observe how we conduct our business of the tournament. Let them laid out measures on how we can make it to the Olympics. We need petition letter or signatures from all over the world ask our country's representatives if we have to or basically make a buzz about it till they give in. It would be a dream come true not only to the Filipino people but as well as to every enthusiast in the world making his way to the Olympics. Never too late for somebody to make it to the Olympics. Mapasalamaton! LSK-FMA
You know that would be really great but do you really think they would come to the party ( as we say here in Australia ) if they really see how it was put together.

Because my GM has just returned from Hong Kong as they were doing a DOCE PARES demo during the WUSHU comps. And now the Chinese are interested in doing theart of Doce Pares and you know what they are like with the Olympics the would try and get bullriding in there if they could.

I would just like to see new sport in there thats all.
Now they taking Arnis into sport, you cannot put a combative art into sport, you only destroy the real essense of this combative art.On a Visayan sayings " Tuk-apan ka lang ni Lolo mo kung buhaton mo ni." .This is not Martial Art you make it into a simple Art not as Combative. Our forefather train for combat but this ,what training you've get in it,a pillow fight?Everybody who deeply involve in FMA goes to combat not in sport. What a sissy ...
I am sorry if i seem obnoxious but i strongly believe that one will not ruin the art of this martial art as one can still practice as well as enter into the art of sport.

I know this for a fact because i practice the art as well as sparring in the art, like many others. You can say all you like but then explain to me why, do they have world titles in WEKAF and DOCE PARES.

Taekwondo is still a combative art if you really want to look at it also. But there is no need to call one a sissy
only because you believe otherwise. All i would like is to see a new sport or art in the olympics.

Hope to catch your reply soon
"Is Your martial art made to build character, improve health, instill discipline, or engage in a fair fight? That is not a martial art, it is a civilized sport and will not help you survive."why then introduce it into sport...Kali is not this...
I know this art of mine has helped me survive in a few situations, with confidence.

Then what is Kali .......prey tell !!!!!!!!!
